To the point: Another place that tries to conquer too many food items instead of focusing on a few and ensuring quality. Interior is dated.Waitresses were...untidy. Runny shakes. Redipped fries (requested a new batch). Unsanitary condiments(they have a jar with peppers at the tables for the taking (gross). Although the server was nice this place won't be on my go to list for a quick bite.

This place is horrible, terrible service, it stinks like shit in there, the food was gross, everyone eyes you down when your walk in like your are wanted for murder.

The food was expected for a steak 'n' shake location, but the service is extremely slow. We waited almost 20 minutes just for water, and then close to an hour for food. There were many servers working, yet none of them were found on the floor with the customers the majority of the time.

Kids eat free weekends and a good burger with fries. Family of 4 can easily eat for less than $20, include 4 shakes for a little more. My boys love it here.

The food is good and the staff is friendly. I got a cheese burger with Parmesan cheese seasoned fries and they were hot and fresh with a side of onion rings and two shakes that they did forget to make until I mentioned them. I ordered online and even though they forgot half of the order including the shake which did take a long time. For the price and cleanliness of the establishment they do offer good deals.

So there is not a Steak n Shake near me within twenty minutes. And after making the drive to this location, I will never make that mistake again. Me and my girlfriend pull up to the drive through, where we order two shakes and one large fry. The girl at the drive through took our order and said "one moment for your total" as we waited over five minutes for her to ring up the order I grew impatient and left. They did not look busy whatsoever, being as there were no cars in the lot it looked dead inside. Maybe if they didn't hire such lazy staff the place would be good. I actually really like this restaurant... When ran correctly. I blame management.. *shake my head*

Is the drive thru EVER open at night? On the rare occasion that i visit this place, there is always a huge semi unloading and blocking the drive thru ordering mic. When I go in to order, service is slower than molasses. I'm sitting here now awaiting the carryout order I placed 40 minutes ago! I like a good shake, but 40 minutes????

Order a malted milkshake, and ask for EXTRA MALT! My new favorite thing. Friendly & courteous staff. Order was taken promptly and the waitress even made some great suggestion that I used. Not the standard droning of 'suggestion sells' but a couple options for my order I had not considered. Had a bacon double cheeseburger. Was fine, and I love the super thin fries here when they are crispy. I order them well done to make sure of this. (The fries, not my burger). Also the fact that these places are 24 hours makes this afavorite after-movie spot for when I get out of a late movie.

Drive thru is terrible rude interrupt while you are saying your order. After coming here for all this, nothing change.

This post is from my experience that I had about 6-8 months ago. It was around 3 am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. We came here for out post bar meal since we were all starving and wanted to get sober before we went home to our wives/girlfriends. We hadn't eaten here in years so it seemed like a decent choice. The food: very average at best. The shakes are what makes the food average, otherwise it would have a much worse rating. Without the shakes, nobody should ever consider eating here. Service: awful! I want to point out that I say the service was awful because when we walked in, we were the only table in the place eating as 2 people had just paid their bill and left, and the place was absolutely filthy. We were seated at a table that they cleared dirty dishes off of after we sat down. Almost every single table in the place had dirty plates and dishes on them. The waitress mentioned that they just had a 2 am "after the bar rush" but honestly, no excuse for that level of dirtiness. Perhaps they only had 2 people working at that time (poor management scheduling), or perhaps the other waitress/busboy had just taken a smoke break, but it's still no excuse for every single table in an empty restaurant to have dirty dishes on it. If she took 2-3 dishes back with her everytime she came out to take our order/bring us drinks/bring our food/bring our bill - she could've cleared at least 3-4 tables. But nope! Never again will I set foot in a DUMP like this. If that's how they leave the area that the customers can actually see, I don't think I want to know what the kitchen looks like. I would give 0 stars if I could.

Service was horrible; we waited 30 mins for our food. The waitress didnt even acknowledge us while we waited we had to ask how long it would be. Then wen we tried to leave there was a line of people at the counter & 3 employees looked at us nd didnt do anything about it. Made us late for our movie. Were never coming here again

Kids 12 and under eat free all weekend, every weekend! 1 free kids plate for every $8 spent. Kids plate excludes drinks & shakes. Dine-in only, Saturday and Sunday. My visit tonight didn't go very well. Ordered food, but the order came out wrong. Two drinks ordered were also delivered wrong. The bill reflected the wrong order, not whet I wanted. Oh well. Maybe it was just my server. I won't be in a hurry to go back.

This is a typical Steak n Shake, with consistently good burgers and fries. They have an above average wait staff.

When I want a warm, juicy, melt in your mouth burger I always think of Steak n Shake. However, the Madison Heights restaurant doesn't always offer the experience that goes along with the food. The young, undisciplined staff and dirty conditions turn me off and after my last experience, I'll now have to travel 20 miles to another location the next time I need a fix.:-(

This place was crazy busy but I got exactly what I ordered and it was delicious. The service wasn't very friendly, and it took about 20 minutes to get my food but the restrooms were clean. I love their big menu. Great burgers and awesome shakes!

  • Regina S.

I love Steak and Shake!! My kids always pick here to go when we have lunch together and I totally understand why!! The shakes are AWESOME! No doubt!! This place is not for dieters, vegetarians, or people who don't want a big fat greasy burger filled with goodness! I have ordered a few different things there. The most recent was the guacamole burger which I LOVED and ate all of (to my gluttoneous disappointment and delight at the same time!) My daughter had the peppermint chip shake and she said it was the best shake she's ever had!! I tried the caramel apple this time and was also in heaven!! The shoestring fries are a great compliment to the burgers and they don't give you a ton... so you have more room for the yummy burgers and shakes! FYI, Marc Summers from Food Network recently gave a shout out to Steak and Shake as his favorite burger joint!! That can't be too shabby! The reason I wont give this place 5 stars is because the waitstaff is s-l-o-w and that can be annoying. But once they get your order, it seems to fly by and then you get your food! They are NOT open 24 hours anymore. The hours are listed til 3am though, so still good eats for after the bar! I recommend S & S to anyone that loves a good burger!! Oh, don't bother with the single, that's kid stuff!! Always order at least a double!

  • Pauly G.

This is a nice spot to grab a double burger or a few sliders. The burgers are thin and depending on how hungry you are you may have to order another. The shoestring french fries leave a little to be desired but if you don't finish them you'll have plenty of room for a milk shake. I like this place, but with the addition of Sonic in the area, I have to say I eat here a lot less. Steak & Shake is open 24 hrs and the wait staff is always friendly. Another bonus is kids eat free on the weekends.

The third and final time trying this place. Food is descent... if and when you can get service. Waited over a half hour then we walked out and went to Wendy's.

Steak N Shake hardly constitutes the top of the fast food barrel, but they represent a dependable source of thick shakes in a variety of flavours, including the seasonal variations that taste vaguely like creamsicles and caramel apples. Other food choices are limited as the menu keeps getting narrower and narrower, and typify the quick, throw together meals of a very late night diner. As many of these are 24 hours, it makes sense to have munchie food for people with the munchies. This particular restaurant doesn't warrant sitting down and may just barely qualify for a whip through the drive thru. Staffed primarily by employees the same age as the target clientele (teens) with the odd adult to supervise, service is spotty, slow, and extremely bellwether. Your server might run by three times to bring a refill, the straw she forgot, and the cutlery she left behind in quick succession and then you never see her again and wonder if North Korean spies abducted her on the way to the kitchen. Others hover around chatting with one another while occasionally paying heed to the families tucked into booths and bored, vacant stares of the hungry waiting for their food. What really knocks this Steak N Shake down, compared to other locations, is the preparation and quality of the food. My beau's hamburger was the slapdash effect of a partycrasher hurrying away from the barbeque before Dad catches them, or someone dashing out the door with a late lunch: a bun glued together by a glob of mustard, the charred patty drunkenly diving out of the way and a pathetic piece of lettuce whipped in place for modesty rather than exposing the glaring emptiness. The lopsided thing fell apart the instant the waitress set the plate down as the bun skewed and the patty tried to make a run for the floor. My supreme chili mac (with spaghetti, cheese, and such) didn't warrant the title supreme ANYTHING except disappointment. Half-cooked spaghetti noodles swam around limply in lukewarm ketchup covered by a sneeze of shredded cheddar that I'm sure was made from plastic. The chili was sweeter than my tea! I could've warmed it up more by throwing it into a microwave for thirty seconds. You may be fast food, restaurant, but you charge more than comparable places and it's not like Wendy's or Chick-fil-A or Subway would serve me tepid food and then keep me waiting for 15 minutes to pay. Dine and dash makes plenty of sense when the lollygagging waitresses can't be bothered to check out the line of 6 bored and irate patrons. What, you expect a tip? Hah!

Darling, who goes to a place called STEAK n shake and gets a grilled chicken sandwich? No no no, this place is SUPPOSED to be greasy and unhealthy -- don't fight it! What to get? Double steak burger with cheese (a standard pretty tasty burger for a fast food place) or the American melt (2 slices of bread slathered in butter, with 2 patties of glistening beef and cheese topped with highly caloric but delicious mystery sauce) JUNIOR chocolate shake (honestly the giant shakes are just make you feel horrible/guilty after drinking them) They do chocolate shakes the old fashioned way -- vanilla ice cream with hershey's syrup. DON'T get the platter, nothing else is worth it. The beans suck, cottage cheese (puhleeze, you don't get that in this kind of joint), the soup is horrible, the coleslaw is disgusting -- save your calories for fries and shakes. Don't sit in, always go through the drive thru, the wait staff can be questionable. Huge bonus? Open 24 hours (for those late night shake cravings), drive-thru, AND they take credit cards (no amex though). Remember folks, this is fast food and not to be mistaken for anything else.

Oh Steak and Shake, how I love thee. My ultimate guilty, fast food, shoe string fry-laden, creamy, milkshakey pleasure. As with most fast food joints, I haven't noticed much of a difference between SnS locations. This isn't simply fast food. This is the Capital Grille of drive thrus. Yes, it's a chain, but it's pretty darn good. This is top of the line fast food. The steak burgers served here are delicious. I always get the Frisco and add pickles. Then I get a half and half shake, because as long as I'm indulging, why not go all the way? They have a ton of Shake flavor a and I'm always challenged to come up with a better combination than the last. Definitely worth a stop.

Stopped in before the movies and got some quick carry out. Food was fine but why no napkins? I can sort of understand making people ask for ketchup or salt but who doesn't need napkins? ?? I got the Cajun burger, was covered in some sort of spicy butter stuff. Got everywhere. No napkins. Wife got a single with everything, dropped her tomato. No napkins. No napkins ......... NO NAPKINS!

Haven't been here in a year I remember why! They say us right away but that's all they did right..... I waited 20 mins for someone to notice my existence, then they take our order and forget it all........ They let my first chocolate shake melt before they realized t was never taken to our table they had to re make it this is 1 hour into service btw no food just two cokes.... Then they bring my food wrong with wrong fries when they checked on what I ordered four times when I ordered it an hour prior... So I had to send it back.... Note they had two other tables then ours and ten employees.... So another 45 mins later they bring new fries no burger another 10 mins a burger that is slippery and leaking it covered the plate with grease as soon as it was set down ..... So I had to change the order and wait another 10 mins for that..... Fuck them

So I've been sitting here for like 30 mins and I haven't got a water or anyone to take my order. I'd rate this one star but it feels unfair because I highly doubt I'm hanging around long enough to order food. For all I know their grill game could be tip top, but this is probably the most garbage service I've ever received.

Upped by on a Saturday at lunch time and could tell they were fairly busy. I would have preferred to dine I but I was on a time crunch. I ordered the classic double with fries and it was delicious! Well cooked and the buns weren't smooshed (one of my biggest pet peeves) and my order was made within 7 minutes. Overall I was satisfied.

It's a solid four stars that fluctuates a half-star on just about every visit. Sometimes it's 4.5 and sometimes it's 3.5. Food seems to better than here than at neighboring Sonic, BK and McDonalds. They tell me it's steak so I just have to take their word for it. Orders usually take longer whether in the drive through or in the dining room as all food is made to order. It may take a while but the food is always hot. I like the triple burger with cheese. Ask for toppings on the side as periodically you get a mayo and mustard flood. Coke products abound and when the ice tea is recently brewed and the dispenser properly cleaned, the tea is the best around. A 44oz. is only a buck. Worth the gamble. Milkshakes flat out rule. I keep it simple: vanilla or chocolate--let's not complicate it. I don't get the shoestring fries but at least they offer you options such as a small salad or fruit. I also like the chili. They have hot dogs and chicken tenders. Stick with burgers here. Service is all over the place. It's the nature of the fast food business. There is a black woman who runs the show like a general in the drive thru. She may be slightly curt but she sure knows how to keep both the lines moving, the customer happy and the orders right. I think employees know better than to cross her. She deserves a medal though. Inside, it's hit or miss. A young man was just terrible as our server. We just took things back to the ordering counter for the issues to be fixed as our guys was busy with woman issues on his phone and prone to frequent smoke breaks. On the other side, Amanda K. is a champ if you get there in the morning (S&S is open 24/7). Please tip her well as she is a go-getter and won't be a server too long. She's going places and hopefully the management recognizes that.

I entered the restaurant at 5pm on a Saturday. It was half full. By the time I got seated & got my food it was 5:30. The food was good (Portobello burger & mocha shake with Parmesan & herb fries). One thing I like about SnS is that you can order a junior shake - very small - which is great if you're watching your carb intake. Their shakes are about the best around so it's a minor indulgence. Above review never got posted so let me add one for today's visit a well. Had the guacamole steak burger and it was very good except it had assumed room temperature before it got to my table. Again a long wait for food with restaurant 60% full.

Friend recommended this place. I went through the drive through on my way to an appointment. Cold coffee, cold and greasy fries. Burger was good but not anything I'd go out of my way for. Especially not with chains like Smashburger, Five Guys or even Hardee's for that matter.

First of all i love steak n shake! I've been to several different locations and never once was my food bad, or a messed up drive thru order... always worries me. But they haven't disappointed me yet. I'd say one of the great fast food burgers around. They have a under $4 menu. Works for me! And lets not forget all the awesome milkshakes they have too. A must try with your meal. Open 24 hours as well. Not sure about the inside though. Now go get a steak burger!!

It was my first time very good food, but they messed up our order and it was a little expensive for just two people at $13.00 or so. Would maybe go back.

I came to the steak and shake mid afternoon with my mistress. She was just beginning her menstrual cycle so I was bummed I was taking her out (I didnt know she was on her period). She was moodier than usual and was really craving a chocolate shake. The waitress was very plesant and I felt like we had very good service for what is obviously fast food. We felt like we were in an old time diner! The food came very fast but the shake took way too long. We had to remind the waitress and subsequently the manager but they took it off the bill. It finally came with much apologys for the wait and a half way believable lie about the shake guy having alot of shakes to make before ours. I made a joke about shaking and shook my body. It was around this time Candice noticed my ring.. The waitress laughed to be polite, my mistress rolled her eyes. Since when are waitresses more polite than the woman you see on the side? I dont think I will be seeing her again.

Waited 15 minutes after being seated and didn't even get to order drinks. It wasn't until he finally got up to leave that they rushed over to us. I don't think I'll ever be visiting this place in the the near future.

This restaurant sure has good food. Their burgers are delicious and so are their seasoned fries. But the service is not that good. It takes a long time for you to be seated, the tables were not cleaned when we sat, and the waiter had an attitude. When you come after midnight, there's less staff members, so you're lucky if you even get noticed. If it wasn't for their delicious food, I wouldn't come back.

I love steak n shake. The double steak and cheese burger. I would rather come in and eat tho. The drive thru seems like they are in a hurry and once my burger was dripping grease. Turned my stomach! Other than that I they have good burgers..

Would not go to again. Waited to be seated. Once seated we never got menus, had to take them off another table. Order shakes, waited 25 minutes before we got them!! But we only got 3/4 she said the 4th didn't go through. About 4 minutes later we got our food. Sadly 2 of them had the wrong order of fries so we had to send those back. Finally once all our food was good we started eating. We noticed we were out of ketchup for the fries so we asked for more. We waited and noticed she went to tend to other people, bus a table and talk with her co-workers so we just went to another table and got some. Finally, we ask for the shake again but for it to go since we were almost done eating. We waited a total of 35 minutes for a vanilla shake. Upon leaving the waitress then told is how she wanted to leave with us complaining about her day. Horrible service. And horrible organization! Also they need to clean up there back kitchen, lots of food on the floor. Will not be dining here ever again!
